The Cloud of Chaos Birthday Bash
January 23rd was an important day. Not only was it the day that ushered in the Year of the Dragon, it was the day that Cloud of Chaos turned two. I take this as a lucky sign that 2012 is going to be a very good year here at Cloud of Chaos! And so to celebrate, I’m throwing a birthday bash, complete with gifts. And these gifts are for you! In Love With Larimar
A couple of weekends ago I was enjoying a sunny Sunday afternoon at the SOWA Open Market and ran across a jewelry maker with a collection of pieces made from lovely blue beads. Similar to turquoise, but softer. Also to Peruvian opal, but not as milky. The stone, as it turned out, is larimar. I’d never heard of it, but I bought a pair of earrings. I love the blue color and the bits of white and grey mixed in. Continue Reading
Green With Envy
I’ve been a fan of London-based jewelry designer Stephen Webster for a while, so when the LA Times blog All The Rage posted about his limited edition collection of rings based on the Seven Deadly Sins, I was positively green with envy.

Would that I had $76,000 so that I actually could own the Envy ring, which features a 35.25-carat peridot with white diamond claws, black diamond eyelids and pupil, surrounded by white diamonds and tsavorite pave.
Pride and Wrath (which I think is my favorite) are already sold out, so anyone with the means to get your Sloth on should hurry to place your special order at stephenwebster.com or by calling 310.246.9500.
Wearing Your Heart Wherever You Want
We all know why there is so much heart-shaped jewelry around on Valentine’s Day. Not everyone has the dough for diamonds. But who’s to say that only puppy-eyed college boys and haggard husbands destined for Hallmark prescribed dates are the ones who should be interested in bling that beats? Or that we have to limit the wearing of it to Valentine’s Day even?
The laws of attraction state that you should surround yourself with images of that which you hope to bring into your life. If love is what you’re looking for, why not wear a pretty heart necklace? What better way to remind the object of your affection just how much you love him than to give him a ring with a heart on it – sparkling for all to see on the outside or discreetly engraved inside? Either way, you both know what it represents.
What I’m getting at is that there are plenty of reasons to appreciate the appeal of wearing your hearts on your ears, fingers, wrists or any other body parts you wish to adorn on any day you feel like it for any reason you want. Love is the only component necessary to make wearing hearts perfectly okay. And everyone loves and is loved by someone.
So, whether you or someone else is doing the gifting, there is plenty of great jewelry out there to let you wear your heart wherever you want.
Here are a few of my current heart-shaped favorites. And if a boy showed up with one of these, I wouldn’t say no!

Alex Woo Little Big Vegas Heart. I hate Vegas but I love hearts.

Elsa Peretti Open Heart Hoop Earrings from Tiffany. These would whisper sweet nothings in my ears all day long.

Cathy Waterman Heart Rings from Barneys. Love.

Sarah Nehama Heart-shaped Fossil Coral Pendant. Boston native Sarah makes amazing heart-shaped pendants strung on beautiful silk or velvet ribbon. Perfect and lovely.
Think Pink
In India pink may be the new navy, but in our culture, when we think of pink we tend to think of all that is girly. Ballet slippers, cupcake frosting, bubble gum, and every automobile and piece of real estate that Barbie ever owned. It holds its place in fashion, too. Elsa Schiaparelli introduced “Shocking Pink” and Mamie Eisenhower loved and wore pink so much that it became known as “Mamie Pink.” A vibrant pink called Honeysuckle was named Pantone’s color of the year for 2011.
Perhaps more significantly though, Pink is the color of universal love. According to color theorists and psychologists, pink has the ability to evoke feelings of happiness, romance, hope, friendship, peace and tranquility. It is believed that pink gemstones carry properties that promote love, self-worth, healing, acceptance and contentment, and that carrying or wearing these stones stimulate these energies. In Feng Shui, pink is used to bring us luck in love and relationships; we are advised to use it liberally in the areas of our home corresponding to the relationship section of the bagua (the far right corner of your home and of any room). This could be in the form of pink crystals hanging from pink ribbons, pink candles, pink flowers and other objects or images that symbolize love. Of course, along with red, pink is the color of all things Valentine.
With pink on the brain lately, this is a collection of some of the rosy things I’m loving at the moment.

I am all over this Calypso Desert Bloom look. I picture myself wearing this as I sit at some funky cafe in LA, soaking in the sunshine and chatting with my gal pals about the various writing projects we have in the works and the cool art event we’ll be off to that night.

The pink Proenza Schouler PS1 makes my heart go pitter pat. Don’t you just want to fondle this rose suede? Great for stashing love letters, tarot decks and romcom screenplays in progress. Not to mention the latest, greatest lipstick from Chanel.

We’re on the Brink of Pink with Boy by Chanel. Named for the love of Coco’s life, this shimmery new Rouge Coco Shine lipstick makes its official debut in April but is available for presale through February 13th at Chanel boutiques and department stores. And yes, that pretty pink pucker belongs to none other than Johnny Depp’s lady love, Vanessa Paradis.

I’m rather obsessed with Chan Luu Wrap Bracelets at the moment. This version, with Deep Red Jade, Salmon Coral, Cherry Quartz, Orange Jade and Rhodonite on Tamba Greek Leather not only makes a great addition to the Desert Bloom ensemble above, but is a great way to bring a splash of cheerful pink to any look.

If pink has a smell, then certainly it is Nana de Bary’s Pink Eau de Parfum with its delicate bergamot and ginger topnotes and a heart of jasmine, iris and sandalwood over a base of vanilla and musk. While we’re gadding about leaving shimmery pink lip prints on cheeks across town, we might as well be floating in a lovely pink haze.

While the idea of pink cars conjures visions of frumpy Mary Kay Cadillacs, nothing says quirky hipster fun mobile like a Pink Smart Car. I’ve seen one in my neighborhood; the woman driving it was adorable in an offbeat sort of way (the best kind if you ask me) and the car suited her perfectly. I would drive this. Oh yes, I would. Either that or a VW Beetle wrapped with the Cloud of Chaos logo.

This Jonathan Adler Hugs pillow belongs on my bed. A swank reminder that “hugging-it-out” can solve everything, who couldn’t use some hugs in bed?

And finally, what kind of Valentine’s Day would it be without flowers? This Pink Sweetheart arrangement comes from Winston Flowers, the go-to florist in Boston when you want to express your love with a flourish of fleurs. The candy pink roses are a symbol of appreciation and friendship, arranged with sweet-scented hyacinths, a symbol of sincerity. And just in case anyone was wondering, Winston’s has my address on file!

My name is Angela Eloise and I am a freelance writer. That sounds as if I am copping to an addiction. I am. In addition to writing this blog, I also write a column about social media and I am at work on a series of essays that I hope to see in print some day. Cloud of Chaos was born from my desire to dance with the absurdity of life, to create a space where I could write and share all of the gorgeous, fun, snarky deliciousness I find spinning around me every day. What does a spinning cloud of chaos have to do with writing? Everything, as it turns out.
